Update from the Sunland

No.1002

22.3.21 – 28.3.21

Blog version:  http://heartlandupdate.blogspot.com/

            To all,

            The follow-up news items:

-- Our flood [993] recovery & repairs are now complete and closed.  I must forthrightly state that the house is in better shape than before the flood.  We are glad to have this episode behind us and hopefully never to be repeated.  I eagerly convey my sincere gratitude to USAA insurance company for their expert and prompt service in the recovery and repair of damage from the flood.

-- We received our 2nd dose of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine [998] on Thursday.  Jeanne and I have done our part to protect ourselves and our fellow citizens.  We will continue to observe the government pandemic guidelines until the CDC determines they are no longer necessary.  Now, if other citizens will do their part, we can get past this dreadful period in our history.  Perhaps this milestone is the beginning of the end of this terrible pandemic year.  Time shall soon tell the tale.

I chose not to illuminate or even acknowledge the outlandish and outrageous statements by some of the front lawyers for the [person who shall no longer be named]— Rudolph William Louis ‘Rudi’ Giuliani and Sidney Katherine Powell.  They aided and abetted the [person who shall no longer be named] in perpetuating the BIG LIE that the 2020 election was fraudulent, rigged against their client, and otherwise corrupted.  One of the companies that suffered from the defamation perpetrated by Powell filed suit against Powell—US DOMINION, INC., DOMINION VOTING SYSTEMS, INC., and DOMINION VOTING SYSTEMS CORPORATION, Plaintiffs, v. SIDNEY POWELL, SIDNEY POWELL, P.C., and DEFENDING THE REPUBLIC, INC., Defendants. [USDC DC Civil Action No. 1:21-cv-00040-CJN (2021)].  On Monday, Powell’s lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the suit that stated among other things, “Analyzed under these factors, and even assuming, arguendo, that each of the statements alleged in the Complaint could be proved true or false, no reasonable person would conclude that the statements were truly statements of fact.”  In essence, anyone listening to Powell’s words should have known what she was saying was false—the BIG LIE is just that, a BIG LIE.  Powell statement’s was in fact affirmation that Powell, Guilani, and the [person who shall no longer be named] depend directly upon the reality that the majority of people and especially their believers will not take the time to check the validity of their outrageous statements.  Unfortunately and regrettably, millions of American citizens believed, still believe, and will continue to believe shameful lies.  Frankly, I hope and expect a jury to award Dominion all of their claimed US$1.3B in damages and more frankly.  The message must be crystal clear.  Lawyers, politicians, wannabe dictators, and other persons of responsibility cannot spew lies and make false statements without consequences.

With the pandemic slowly coming under control, we suffered two more mass shootings—Atlanta (16.March.2021) and Boulder (22.March.2021).

First and foremost, my condolences and heartfelt prayers must go to the families, friends, and immortal souls of those who lost their lives in those two tragic events. Both perpetrators were captured alive and will stand trial for their crimes.  I hope and trust the criminal justice system will properly try, convict and punish them both to the fullest extent of the law.  They deserve nothing less.

Second, there is no debate, argument or question from me that we must treat the root causes of such senseless firearm violence.  As I have written too many times, I am not keen on treating symptoms.  We must go directly after the root cause(s).  In order to do so, we must meticulously study such events to determine the root causes.  Reacting to emotions and the kneejerk urges to enact feel-good actions that have no hope of solving the root cause(s) of the problem will never succeed.

As occurs after horrific events such as these, far too many people are yelling the chants for banning assault rifles.  To my knowledge, none of the weapons used in the subject events were assault rifles.  They look like assault rifles, but they are not assault rifles.  That is a very specific type of firearm, and they are and should remain illegal in the United States as established by the National Firearms Act of 1934 [PL 73-474; 48 Stat. 1236; 26.June.1934].  Automatic weapons have been and remain illegal in the United States.  One more time, a rifle, a pistol, a knife, and a baseball bat are all tools no different from a fork or a screwdriver.  They are inanimate tools.  They do absolutely nothing without a human being to employ them.  It is the human operators that perpetrate those crimes, not the tools.  The tools can do nothing without the humans who use them.  So, if we feel the urge to ban something, let us ban the humans.

I see these calls for banning assault rifles in an entirely different light.  To me, such demands are just another variation of moral projectionist prohibitions quite akin to alcohol, tobacco, psychotropic substances, gambling, prostitution, or anything they don’t like.  Sure, the conservatives have their lot as do the liberals.  Yet, they are all the same—ban anything they do not like.  All of them, regardless of what their political leanings or motivations, are intrusions upon our fundamental right to privacy and freedom of choice . . . like everything else.  The conservatives have their hot buttons and the liberals have theirs, but they are all the same.  Thus, once again, I must voice my objection to banning simple tools.

President Biden held his first press conference (presser) on Thursday.  OMG, what a refreshing change—a president who actually acts like a president.  Halleluiah!!  He is not the most eloquent or dynamic speaker, but he is monumentally better than what we were subjected to for the last four years.  He did not puff up his chest.  He did not ridicule the press or belittle anyone else.  He continues to reach out to whatever Republicans remain in government.  As some have written, he may be wasting his time.  That may well be, but I give him credit for the attempt.  Peace and stability.

A personal friend of many years who happens to be a staunch believer in the [person who shall no longer be named] sent posted the following meme.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is described as a “key partner” on Page 613 of the Democrat’s 628-page relief bill, which calls for a donation of “not less than $3,500,000,000” to the Global Fund to Combat AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.

Although it’s noble to raise money to help eradicate AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis around the world, it’s unclear why $3.5 billion in American taxpayer funds must be given to this charity right now.

To which, I replied:

I have no idea what "relief bill" this refers to in your post. The only relief bill signed into law by the Biden administration is PL 117-002.  First, it is 242 pages, not 628 pages. There is no page 613.  There is no mention of Gates (either one, or their foundation) in the entire document. There is no mention of AIDS (or HIV), tuberculosis or malaria.  This missive is totally false, i.e., there is not one scintilla of fact.  The people who create these false posts depend upon citizens not taking the time or effort to check the facts. This is flat-assed wrong!!

This meme represents the times in which we live, except most of the really good memes contain just enough fact to make them believable so that those so inclined accept the whole message as truth.

We must learn to filter out such erroneous information and especially the better memes that feed their hatred.  We must adapt to the times in which we live.

With all of the brouhaha over the outright BICP legal assault on voting rights, the Senate filibuster has come once again to center stage.  The filibuster is not a constitutional matter but rather a function of Senate rules.  The opponents like to point to the filibuster as an artifact of the original Jim Crow era (as opposed to the current, resurrected, Jim Crow version).  Segregation and slavery may have been the stimulant in the genesis of the filibuster (1806), but it was not the only purpose.  The Senate filibuster is and remains consistent with the founding documents as a bulwark against simple majority rule.  There are ample examples in the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, and other founding documents that demonstrate effort to protect minority rights.  I suspect the BICP (former Republican) members recognize that they are rapidly moving farther into minority status, and they are desperate to stop the tide.  For decades, the filibuster required a senator to hold the floor in opposition to a particular bill as depicted in the movie Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939).  Circa the late 60s, or early 70s, the Senate eliminated the talking filibuster, essentially allowing a single anonymous senator to stop a bill from reaching the floor.  I am and remain in the middle on this one.  Protecting minority rights and inducing compromise are vital elements of our democracy.  Like the Electoral College and many other such protections, the filibuster is an important element of American democratic governance.  While the BICP (Republican) minority may see their power waning, I am not ready to write off the protections for the Republican minority.  We never know what tomorrow may hold.  Let us not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Comments and contributions from Update no.1001:

“Thanks young man..lovey dovey?  That’s a new one on me!!!  Like it.”

My reply:

Ah, yes, we live and learn.  I suppose it is a uniquely American term that seems to be quite descriptive of the conduct of the [person who shall no longer be named] with respect to the dictators—Putin, Xi, Kim, ErdoÄŸan, Saud, et al.  Glad you like it.  Feel free to deploy it as you wish.

Comment to the Blog:

“Is nothing worthy of discussion other than the Presidency and the virus?  Perhaps we could talk about the spikes in virtually all mental health problems or the millions of pending evictions.  Or sedition.

“I accepted the vaccine in hopes of escaping some of the restrictions.  Given the ‘vaccine passports,’ that may yet come about.  However, the germophobes will have to admit that the risk posed by vaccinated people going about their lives is less than the hazards of the restrictions.”

My response to the Blog:

We can discuss anything you wish . . . just raise the topic, express your opinion or ask a question.  Mental health and sedition are two great topics.  What aspects would you like to discuss?

We were issued cards to document our first dose.  We get our 2nd does on the day after tomorrow, and I expect our cards will be updated; then it will be another card we must carry.  We have not tried to travel or any other activity where a vaccine passport might be useful.  I suspect even with vaccination, we will still have to observe protection guidelines until fatalities, hospitalizations, and perhaps even infections decrease to manageable levels, mainly because the science has not caught up with the determination of transmissivity by inoculated individuals.  If the science establishes that vaccinated people cannot transmit the virus, the safeguards will be relieved earlier than otherwise.

BTW, what vaccine did you receive?

 . . . Round two:

“The mental health outcomes of the restrictions are evident but not getting the airtime of virus-related marketing by the government and many other sources.  Overdoses, suicides, and homicides stand out.  About ten days ago, a local news station here in Columbus, Ohio, reported that year-to-date homicides were twice as many as early 2020.  That seems to mean nothing to the governor, the President, or their minions.  I’ll give our Mayor, Andrew Ginther, credit for at least trying to address this.

“I received the 1-shot vaccine on March 5 but have yet to benefit from it (unless one has faith in the medical need and efficacy).  It raised my blood pressure for about two and a half weeks.  Also, oddly enough, I gained and lost about two pounds.”

. . . my response to round two:

There is no question or debate that the pandemic has added considerable stress to our lives.  Mental health services and treatment is a difficult nut to crack.  Yes, we should have more comprehensive mental health services.  Yet, the burden does not rest entirely on the government, the profession, or business.  As the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.  Basic counseling services can help to relieve stress to some level, but underlying clinical illness makes the screening process far more complex.  From a societal perspective, we absolutely must de-stigmatize mental illness and mental treatment, like so many other personal, private matters, e.g., drug use, prostitution, gambling, sexuality, et al.  From my rather naïve and simplistic perspective, de-stigmatization is akin to expunging racism, sexism, and all the other forms to discrimination based on any one or combination of the social factors.  I come from a generation where many of those factors were disqualifying, which created a very powerful force to hide or deny those factors.  We will not be able to help so many ‘in need’ individuals until mental health is de-stigmatized.  The latest mass murderer appears to be yet another example of our failure to detect and treat mental illness.  He showed signs; the signs were seen by others; but, we failed to intervene.  Now, 10 innocent people are dead.

I am not sure how you expect to prove benefit from the vaccine; it is proving a negative.  Your side effect symptoms seem fairly minor to me.  I surmise you received the Johnson & Johnson single dose (since the AstraZeneca single dose does not yet have its EUA).  We get our second dose of Moderna tomorrow afternoon; we have blocked out the next three days (Fri-Sun) just in case.  Unfortunately, even our fully vaccinated card will not preclude the requirement for societal protections, until we know scientifically that vaccinated individuals cannot transmit the virus, or we achieve the herd immunity threshold (70%).

 . . . Round three:

“You ignore the connection between the restrictions and the spikes in mental health issues.  I don't.

“I'm not concerned with distinctions among the vaccines or even their efficacy.  I want the restrictions and the mask orders lifted ASAP.  They are costing us too much in mental health and economics.”

. . . my response to round three:

Perhaps your choice of the word ‘ignore’ was chosen to garner reaction, or debate, or simply to be argumentative.  I have no idea why you chose that word, but nonetheless, my response is nothing of the kind.  I suppose I did not respond as you wished me to respond.  So, in the face of your antagonism, please allow me to emphatically state that I fully recognize and acknowledge the connection between pandemic restrictions and the spike in mental health issues.  I do not separate mental and physical health; they are both whole health.  The pandemic and the previous administration’s tepid, laissez-faire response have directly caused enormous costs in mental and physical health.  I wish there was a simple answer, but the grotesque unpreparedness of the government includes the paucity of mental health treatment facilities, professionals, and processes, which are whole society matters.

I share your desire to be rid of the pandemic response measures for all of the reasons noted plus many more.  However, until we have reduced the transmissivity of the virus in our society, those measures are required.  If every citizen had followed the guidelines a year ago, we might have gotten ahead of the virus and dramatically reduced the consequences.  We did not (thanks in large part to the defiance of the [person who shall no longer be named]); thus, we have what we have, and we must deal with the situation before us.  If every citizen had done the responsible thing despite the foolishness of the [person who shall no longer be named], we would not be in the state we are.

Another contribution (with permission and redacted for privacy):

“enjoyed 1001, even as abbreviated and as greatly lengthened by the exchange with the loyal Brit.

“Regarding Italy sentiments, I have only traveled there and Greece and Ephasis, Turkey, as part of tour groups greatly aided by excellent local guides, but for ten years in Federal Court represented an Italian partnership and Swedish corporation owned by a German expatriate who owned a villa near Palermo.

“Met his wife and some of their dozens of servants at ----’s funeral in his home city of Hamburg, where my 9-hour trans-Atlantic review of Deutsch was totally unnecessary, as were my many attempts to speak the language to him, since he spoke six languages fluently.”

My reply:

Thx for your observations; always appreciated.

I’m glad you enjoyed and found useful the 1001 Update.  I will strive to maintain that usefulness.  Yeah, he has been a regular contributor.  He has helped me with local research mostly applicable to my To So Few series of historical novels—a long term friendship.

Europe tends to be far more multilingual than other regions since so many cultures and languages are in close proximity.  I lived and worked in Northern Italy.  The farthest south I’ve gone so far is Napoli, or more precisely Pompeii.  We did pass through the Strait of Messina and by Mt. Etna on a Med cruise, but I’ve not yet set foot on Sicily.

I hope your experience representing a multinational concern was enjoyable and worthwhile.  Did you ever get to enjoy the villa in Palermo?

 . . . Round two:

“I could waste lots of your time on the subject of ----------- and his brother in Argentina and a niece ------ who spent time in our home as a teenager and his now deceased widow -------------------------, whose father had the patent on the unique container feature used in ----’s internationally popular Sicilia brand not-from-concentrate ‘fresh’ lemon and lime juices.  He gave ----------, a Jackson MS food broker with two spoiled sons, an exclusive contract to sell his juice in USA, but ------ soon tired of varying Swiss franc exchange rates and formed ten corporations for his boys to sell a cheaper clever look-alike product, Pompei (inferior reconstituted juice), instead of meeting contract goals for Sicilia, utilizing the patented plastic bottle nozzle design!  Bad greedy man!  ---- eschewed ungentlemanly litigation and instead sold to a Canadian, who began to sell Sicilia in USA.  ------ sued ----’s partnership and Swiss corporation for breach of contract in MS Chancery.

“Court expecting home cooking advantage, but we removed to Federal Court where in a long jury trial a former partner and I eventually defeated ------’ $11million claim and got a judgment for counterclaim.

“Meanwhile ---- sued for patent infringement in Dallas, but his NJ attorney lost surprisingly.  Long story!”

. . . my response to round two:

Not a waste of my time, my friend.  My offer always remains valid—share what you wish.

The nature of your last missive compels me to ask whether you object to sharing with the Blog?  Your words seem rather personal, but I see value to the larger audience (anonymously of course; I can leave the names or block them as you think appropriate).  International relations and commerce are rarely simple.  I’m glad you could help ---- and his business.  Unfortunately, there are lots of greedy bad men out there, which is exactly why we need laws and regulation.

 . . . Round three:

“Yes, the interesting story poorly abbreviated in my response to your much more compelling Blog, does contain names that deserve the courtesy of privacy even after 30 years.  However, you my friend are welcome to make any appropriate use of my responses any time, modifying as you see fit for the above or any other considerations.

“In answer to your earlier question, I regret that I never was able to accept many invitations to ----’s villa and lemon orchard, despite many attempts to get Space-A to Italy and dreams of a luxurious visit for ----- before --- intervened with our lives, eventually taking hers.”

. . . my response to round three:

Excellent.  Thank you.  I shall attempt a new form of redaction for this issue.  Regardless, I shall remove the names to respect their privacy.

Too bad; like you, I’m sure it would have been a glorious visit.  So much history in proximity to Palermo.

Life goes on.

My very best wishes to all.  Take care of yourselves and each other.

Cheers,

Cap                  :-)

Update no.1001

 Update from the Sunland

No.1001

15.3.21 – 21.3.21

Blog version:  http://heartlandupdate.blogspot.com/

            To all,

The Update has had a few thin editions in the past, but this will be the thinnest of them all.  So far, President Biden is delivering what I wanted—peace and stability.  No insults, no grotesque misstatements, no tweets, no firings, no ridiculous conspiracy theories, no nonsense.  His administration is achieving more than I expected and delivering on the objectives he set out during the campaign.  I like what he is doing in fighting the pandemic, but we have a long way to go with so many Americans defying the guidelines and refusing inoculation.  He has become the Herculean effort to mend fences with our allies and quietly served notice to the dictators that the lovey-dovey ridiculousness of the last administration is no more.  Most of all, he is acting presidential.

Comments and contributions from Update no.1000:

“Good day young man plus 1000 blogs!

“You mention the loss of contributors to the blog.  Yes, I agree with you from my own experience of life.  The team I use to speak to our local schools re remembrance used to consist of former National Servicemen, (Call ups) WW2 soldiers, full time servicemen and me!  Now it’s only me!

“We used to speak to hundreds of students which I wish to keep doing so I need a cunning recruiting plan Cap!  With your different experience I’d like to have you on the team.  Make a booking!”

My reply:

Yep, milestone passed.

It is a sad fact of life.  Death comes to us all.  It seems my primary job these days is pushing that inevitability out as far as I can.

Bless you for all you do for veterans, my friend.  Hopefully, the younger generation will pick up the lance in time.

I would love to join your team in speaking to students and young folks, to help them appreciate the gratification found in service and the significance of history.  We’re still talking about a trip to the Motherland when travel is permitted, again.  Middle son is actually planning a trip for his family to visit the place where we lived when I worked and they went to school in England.  Go figure!

We get our second dose next week, so progress by jerks.

 . . . Round two:

“That all sounds good Cap-keep smiling.  This summer could well be our third without an overseas holiday, normally a night in Belgium with a RAF friend’s family, he was an air traffic controller and still does that work.  Then a night or two in Bavaria and then onto Austria and Veneto.  Magic.  Never mind it has been done many times and my Italian only amounts to ‘two beers please.’”

. . . my reply to round two:

Oh my, I suspect your Italian proficiency is better than you portray, my friend.  While there are and will be bumps in the road, I do believe we are making headway against the pandemic.  We will overcome; it is only a matter of time and perseverance.  The surge in Europe is not a positive sign, but I suppose it is understandable.  We let up restrictions too quickly; we get a surge in infections.  We get our 2nd dose next week.

 . . . round three:

“2nd dose! Excellent.  We have another three weeks waiting for that but we’ve had our first of course so ‘all’s well’.  And yes, ‘it will end well’. We’ve started on planning 100 years of the RBL due in May.  We’re planning an event with our parish council financial support.  There will be several meetings to bang that on the head!

“OK mate must move on.

“Don’t worry about us Brits and enjoy the sunshine-they tell me it’s a large yellow glowing lump in the sky.”

. . . my reply to round three:

A week from today for us.  We will do our part to beat this pandemic.  Now, we just need to get more American citizens vaccinated.

Congratulations on the approach anniversary of RBL.  I am certain you will find success in fund raising for the celebration.  All such organizations need fresh, young blood to remain vital.  Good luck.

I suspect the British nation is in better shape than the American nation, but I still fret about the future.

Clear skies and warming temps here.  Almost time to jump back in the pool.  LOL

Comment to the Blog:

“Congratulations on your milestone.  I'm sure it's been an interesting trip.

“I have noted that blogs in general are in decline. “Vlogs” such as YouTube and podcasts seem to be gaining favor.

“The DNC actors (Biden) don’t understand (or don’t want to understand) that the Republicans are committed to the Republicans.  The DNC wastes valuable time and political capital trying to get GOP help.  They should respond to polling on issues.

“The ‘For the People Act’ includes many useful election improvements and also some poison pills for smaller parties.  Those involve qualifying for the funds and how the matches work.

“I look forward to ending the virus restrictions, particularly unmasking.  We're having severe mental health results of those restrictions, such as our doubled homicide rate here in Columbus.  Also, I have a personal malfunction with my nose and the masks.  The widely advertised exemptions to the mask order are not occurring in reality.

“Most nations have discarded royalty.  That’s actual progress.  I don’t care what the British ones do.”

My response to the Blog:

The time change passed without observance.  Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving Time, and I am grateful. Hopefully, you made the transition without difficulty.

Thank you.  Yes, it has been an interesting trip and continues to be so.

Perhaps so.  I cannot imagine making that transition.  I will stick with writing, which I enjoy doing – the process.

Again, perhaps so.  Nonetheless, I laud President Biden for making the attempt and expending the effort.  It is the correct thing to do.  We need debate, negotiation and compromise.  I do believe they are responding to We, the People.  The majority of our citizens support the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, and other reforms on the president’s agenda.  So far, I support what President Biden is doing and how he is doing it.  He is acting as a president should.  As the BICP believers persist in their efforts of division, regression, and oppression, they will dig themselves deeper and deeper into irrelevance.

While I cannot say the For the People Act is the reform we need, it is certainly better than what we have now and especially better than where the BICP is trying to take us.  They are being exposed for what they are.  White supremacy movements, xenophobia, homophobia, and all of the other divisions of hate espoused by the BICP have no place in this hopefully returning grand republic.

You are not alone, my friend.  Your difficulties may be unique, but the general consequences of the pandemic constraints are shared by many.  We get our second dose next week; it will be good to pass that milestone.  We look forward to the day we can step out onto the brighter sunlit uplands.  This too shall pass.

Intellectually, I have always resisted the notion of superiority by birth whether royalty or the dreadful caste system in India.  Likewise, I reject the exceptionalism of wealth.  Money is just another form of royalty.

 . . . Round two:

“A thousand essays on all manner of issues is a lot of good work.  Duly noted, at least.

“I’m ‘out of sync’ due to the time change.  Others have more stress.

“I could imagine doing a podcast, because I enjoy extemporaneous/spontaneous discussion, but it would take real preparation.

“‘Debate, negotiation and compromise’ are not available.  The Republican Party will have its way or no way.  Let’s carry out the will of the people rather than try to pacify the hateful.  Also, the value of compromise is itself debatable as our national issues deepen into multiple crises.

“All things pass in time.  In the meantime, the restrictions are fatal to many and harmful to most.

“That’s an excellent point about the exceptionalism of wealth, but the British Royals get more media attention than they deserve.”

. . . my response to round two:

Thanks, mate.  Appreciation is the icing on the cake.

You will adapt in a few days.  I like living in a no-DST state.

Yeah . . . a lot more preparation . . . plus I’d have to put clothes on—a non-starter.  LOL

You may well be correct.  Certainly, the current body of evidence suggests you are spot on correct.  However, the non-aligned, non-tribal, independent in my political thinking says it is worth a valiant attempt.  The BICP (GOP) recognizes reality; they are a minority and a diminishing minority at that.  These are the gasping death throes of a dying political party.  Rather than adapt to the changing world around them, they are becoming progressively more desperate to invoke Jim Crow laws just like white supremacist Southern Democrats did a century ago.  That is exactly why I think HR.1, as incomplete and flawed as it is, must be considered essential.  Jim Crow was not acceptable a century ago; it is most emphatically not acceptable today.  The BICP (GOP) refuse to adapt, let them reap the whirlwind.  I hold very little sympathy for that tribe.

I cannot argue with your assessment of the harmfulness of the pandemic restrictions.  What do you propose to relieve the stress?

The British do put on a great show, and I enjoy a good show.  They also represent a lot of history.

 . . . Round three:

“If the Republicans decline as we expect and H.R. 1 makes fundraising difficult for smaller parties, that leaves us with one party.  The Democrats have a better presentation than the Republicans, but I still don't want a one-party government.

“To relieve the consequences of the restrictions, we should first admit that the masks that don't meet at least the N95 standard have essentially no value.  Then we could focus on viral loading, which would lead to treating the rest of the hotspots.  However, time and the vaccines have led to a reduction in new cases, if the numbers are credible.  Sooner or later, the restrictions will go away or simply be ignored.”

. . . my response to round three:

I trust you have recovered from your tardiness.  LOL

You are, of course, spot on correct.  A one-party political system is one step short of dictatorship and autocracy no matter who it is.  I have not yet seen the language in HR.1 that would make it more difficult for smaller political parties to raise campaign funds; I’ll keep looking.

Any mask is better than no mask.  Remember, the object of a facial mask is to attenuate spittle (that carries the virus) expelled by an individual shouting, singing, or even just speaking.  Yes, we will eventually beat this pandemic.  A friend actually suggested masks might not ever go away; dread the thought.  Nonetheless, when we encounter another airborne virus or pathogen, masks must return.

 . . . Round four:

“The virus is an airborne species in the micron-size range.  Based on my asthma experience with particles in that range, my comment stands.  Remember that most of those ‘experts’ on TV are presenting their speculation via graphics anyone could create.”

. . . my response to round four:

Yes, it is, but it is not self-propelled.  It is carried by saliva and other oral/nasal fluids.  Let us keep things in perspective.

 . . . Round five:

“The New York Times this morning has an article (their "Morning" column) on perspective about the virus.  It seems both Republicans and Democrats have distorted perspectives on this one.  (Big surprise, huh?)”

. . . my response to round five:

Nope, no surprise.  The distortions among Democrats are far less injurious than the distortions among the BICP (GOP).  We can filter out President Biden’s “positive thinking.”  The distortions by the [person who shall no longer be named] are far more injurious; it can be easily argued his inaction, indifference and outright subterfuge killed the majority of the half of a million American fatalities so far.

 . . . Round six:

“I suppose the Democrats believe their distortions do less harm.  I'm sure the Republicans feel the same way about theirs.”

. . . my response to round six:

Perhaps so; that is the nature of tribalism.

I was trying to observe both tribes in an objective manner.  I am not in favor of either BICP (GOP) or Democrat tribes.

My very best wishes to all.  Take care of yourselves and each other.

Cheers,

Cap                  :-)

Update no.1000

 Update from the Sunland

No.1000

8.3.21 – 14.3.21

Blog version:  http://heartlandupdate.blogspot.com/

            To all,

I suppose this issue is a bit of a milestone—the 1000th edition of the Update in its various forms.  The Blog began 20 years ago with the “Family Update from Italy.”  Others asked to subscribe since the Update was a de facto journal of my experiences and explorations of Italy while I was employed in the country by Piaggio Aerospace, SpA, an Italian company.  When I returned to the United States, the Blog transitioned to the “Update from the Heartland,” since I was employed in Wichita, Kansas.  When we retired and moved to Arizona (2014 and 2018 respectively), the Blog transitioned one more time to its present form.  Only a handful of subscribers have been regular contributors to the public debate of contemporary issues that is the basis of the Update from the Sunland.  A dozen or so others contribute occasionally.  My subscriber list is diminishing as folks reach their end of days—part of life.  I suspect most on the distribution list are relegated to the SPAM folder because of the means I must use to maintain the anonymity of the list.  Oh well, the Update is not what it once was, and neither am I.  Life goes on.

            The follow-up news items:

-- NASA designed, launched, and landed Percy the robot explorer on Mars [997].  Percy took a series of photographs that NASA spliced together for an impressive panoramic view of the spacecraft’s landing site.  For those interested, here is the URL for the panorama:

https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap210309.html

If you have any difficulty with the URL, go to the Archive link at the bottom of the Astronomy Picture of the Day page, and select “2021 March 9: Perseverance 360: Unusual Rocks and the Search for Life on Mars.”  My immediate impression: “They wanted rocks.  They got rocks.”  It appears they chose a rich hunting ground for signs of prehistoric life on Mars.  I eagerly await the findings discovered by Percy.

-- President Biden signed into law the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 [PL 117-002; H.R.1319; House: 220-211-0-1(3); Senate: 50-49-0-1(0); 135 Stat. xxx] – the massive US$1.9T COVID19 [946 & sub] relief bill after the previous versions [948949950989990].  President Biden tried mightily to gain BICP (former Republican) support without success.  Representative Jared F. Golden of Maine (a Democrat) was the only member of Congress to cross party lines; he voted against the bill for undisclosed reasons.  So, without BICP support, the economy gets another injection of spending. We can only hope this is the last one necessary.

One of these days, we shall cease to even mention or refer to the [person who shall no longer be named], having been relegated to the dustbin of history.  Today is not that day.

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court summarily rejected yet another appeal of the [person who shall no longer be named] without hearing a word of argument.  This one was from the 7th Circuit, which had also rejected the appeal of the judge’s ruling in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.  The sad reality in all this is the [person who shall no longer be named] has failed miserably to even remotely perceive the facts swirling around him.  So many courts and judges have rejected his arguments without seeing sufficient probable cause to put the case before a jury.  And yet, he persists in the lies he used to instigate insurrection [991] and perpetuates to this day.  We have known for many years that the [person who shall no longer be named] has been and remains delusional, but it is all of the good people who believe in him and believe what he says that is the most disturbing.  Eventually, the facts will get through.  It may take months, or years, or even decades, but eventually the facts shall prevail even with that lot.

President Biden gave a national primetime address on Thursday evening after signing the latest COVID19 relief act.  To summarize the president’s address, what a refreshing change from the last fellow to hold the job, or rather pretend to hold the job.  It was not the best political speech I have ever heard, but as I observed . . . what a refreshing change from what we have endured for the last four years.  He gave us the truth about the pandemic as he knows it, and most importantly, we did not have to listen to disinfectant, hydroxychloroquine, fake news, stolen elections, rebellion, or all the other nonsense the man uttered.  President Biden gave us a positive message with the correct tone and no drivel.

The House of Representatives passed H.R.1 - For the People Act of 2021 [House: 220-210-0-2(3)] and sent it to the Senate for action.  Representative Bennie Gordon Thompson of Mississippi (a Democrat) was the only member of the House to cross the aisle; he voted against the bill for undisclosed reasons.  I have not read all of the words, but what I have read strongly suggests the House (and hopefully Congress) want to ensure free and unfettered elections.  While there is a lot to this bill, it does not go anywhere near far enough for genuine election reform.  The legislation appears to be aimed directly at the something like 250 legislative bills in 30 plus states that have only one purpose—suppress the vote of non-BICP citizens—a direct assault on the voting rights of American citizens.  The BICP (the former Republican Party) has shown its true colors and its grotesque level of desperation to maintain their fleeting and diminishing touch on power. To do that, the BICP has demonstrated that it is perfectly willing to return to the days of Jim Crow.  The term comes from a fictional minstrel caricature during the days of Andrew Jackson.  Who da thunk it!  The party of Lincoln, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the 14th Amendment has now turned back to Jim Crow laws, just as the minority Democrats did in the days after the Civil War to retain political power.  I hope the Senate and Congress can find the courage to pass HR.1—however imperfect, something is better than nothing.  The BICP assault on voting rights gives me yet another reason to never vote for a BICP candidate (or what few Republicans that remain) ever again.  They forfeited any sliver of respect due them.

Comments and contributions from Update no.999:

Comment to the Blog:

“Qanon stands as a dangerous delusion made possible by modern technology.

“I’ve always disliked Governor Cuomo (D-New York).  He oozes arrogance.  I support the #MeToo movement, but Cuomo’s deceit about the nursing home deaths stands as his most serious offense.”

My response to the Blog:

You got that right in spades, my friend.  QAnon is indeed a very dangerous delusion—no accountability, no facts, no responsibility.  Making the threat far worse, millions of citizens actually believe the outright false, malicious information distributed by QAnon.

Your impressions of Andrew Cuomo were far better than mine.  It is sad to see such a foolish disintegration, but he is still entitled to due process.  So, let the investigation proceed, lay out the facts, and let the chips fall where they may.  I do not support the calls for his resignation.

Another contribution:

“Cap, well as it comes from the sunshine land it warms me to read it. Keep working on it.

“How’s your new top man doing, we don’t hear much from your neck-o-the-woods apart from Harry and Megan.  Most of us Brits are sickened by that fiasco.  Bloody sad business.  After all that Harry has done to support and fundraise for our troops it has come as something of a major shock.  I won’t give you my view on that relationship after all she is one of your country women.  He has made an error, I’ll leave it at that.”

My reply:

I am glad you found the Update useful.  I will keep writing until I am unable to do so.

President Biden is doing quite well from my perspective.  I also acknowledge that is not a universally shared opinion.  I think the reason you don’t hear much is he is not out tooting his horn like the previous bloke did all so often. Peace and stability have replaced chaos and corruption.  Biden tried very hard to compromise to gain Republican votes.  The BICP members were not interested in compromise; they were consumed by obstruction.  My generation in the political arena on both sides of the aisle have failed miserably.  I say let us throw the whole lot out.  Regrettably, my generation is contaminating the next generation, so it will likely take generations to overcome the corrosive tribalism that we endure at present.

We watched the whole broadcast interview with Meghan and Harry.  It is tragic that it has come to this.  To be frank, the Royal family did not shine.  Coming in the aftermath of Diana’s treatment, the depiction is far worse.  Although not mentioned directly, the one who comes off the worst is Prince Charles—the crown prince and potential future king.  They tried to protect Harry’s grandparents, so perhaps the Queen is simply not aware of what goes on in the household she represents.  After that interview, she must reform how “The Firm” works.

 . . . follow-up comment:

“I’ve just noticed the number on your current update-are we having a party next week?  That is extraordinary Cap, do you remember the subjects of your earliest updates?  I’d rather drink a beer with you in the sunshine but I will toast you from here in the rain.

“Indeed the Harry and Megan saga will stay top of the page for some time.  Of course us Brits, especially those of us who have served and in many cases have met with the Royals in our eyes they can do no wrong.  My view is if you wish to marry into that life it is very much like signing for service to your country no matter what.  You did it and so did I we never expressed rebellion against our leaders, we gritted our teeth, talked privately in the mess and got on with it, that’s what we signed up for.

“Of course it has sponsored lots of questions over here especially reference the colour of her child’s skin.  If that is true then it was very much out of order.  But possibly it was a genuinely innocent but inappropriate question.  Will we ever know?  Well we’re expecting a statement from the Palace today so we shall see.”

 . . . my follow-up reply:

Yep, the first millennial edition.  (I wonder if there will be a second?)  I’d love to have a party, but I don’t think many care.  Such is life.  Sure do remember many; some of those issues are recurrent even to this day, e.g., every citizen’s freedom of choice and fundamental right to privacy.  Edition no.1 was a report on my initial days of employment in Italy.  I’m with you on the beers.  Someday!

Quite understand, mate.  History calls it the divine right of kings.  It was recorded by Sir William Blackstone in 1765 {§1-7-237}.  The notion does not float in the colonies . . . although there are some among us who still believe and hold equivalency.  I agree; donning the uniform carries responsibility for the service, i.e., we do NOT have the right to speak our minds.  What is different here is, Harry has direct combat experience.  He has seen the consequences of PTSD.  That makes a mark on a man.  I suspect, truth be told, Harry still suffers PTSD from the treatment of his mother and her death.  To that end, he was determined to not let that happen to himself or his wife, and God bless him for that courage.  Stiff upper lip is quite noble, but sooner or later, compassion must prevail.  From an American colonist’s perspective, royals are just human beings like all the rest of us; they are not special, even though they have been anointed with special privileges simply because of their birth.

Racism is a very real and often insidious phenomenon that is passed along by parents to their children.  At the end of the day, the hereditary pigmentation of one’s skin should not matter a twit to anyone for any reason.  Unfortunately, that is not the world we live in at the moment.  We can pray and work for a better tomorrow.

My very best wishes to all.  Take care of yourselves and each other.

Cheers,

Cap                  :-)

Update no.999

Update from the Sunland

No.999

1.3.21 – 7.3.21

Blog version:  http://heartlandupdate.blogspot.com/

            To all,

After watching the test launches of SpaceX Starship SN8 [987] and SN9 [995], the SN10 Starship test vehicle launched from the SpaceX facility at Boca Chica, Texas, on Thursday, 4.March.2021, at 17:14 [S] CST (23:14 [Z] GMT).  SN10 flew to 10 kilometers, flipped over to its horizontal descent attitude, and then fired up all three engines to right itself and stick the landing.  I actually cheered their success.  A post-landing fire at the base of the standing vehicle appeared at the base of the spaceship and seemed to be out of the ordinary but fairly small.  Fire suppression attempted to extinguish the fire.  Minutes after landing successfully, an explosion occurred at the base of the craft presumably in the engine compartment and lifted the vehicle a hundred meters in the air before crashing back down.  A good video of the SN10 events:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkXUS321oZ4

My guess is something failed in the plumbing, allowing propellant to leak in the engine compartment area that eventually ignited and exploded.  I believe they will sort out the problem in short order.  I was really excited and encouraged by the accomplishments of the SN10 flight.  They are close to a functional system.

            The follow-up news items:

-- In the wake of the failed insurrection [991], the latest QAnon pronouncement declared that the [person who shall no longer be named] would be inaugurated as the 19th POTUS on 4.March.2021.  Well, surprise, surprise, QAnon was wrong, yet again.  For those who may not be familiar with the associated history, the 4th of March was the traditional inauguration date prior to the 20th Amendment (1933).  The [person who shall no longer be named] is still and remains a former president.  I am not sure why QAnon referred to the wannabe dictator as the 19th POTUS, but hey, I am only reporting what they claimed.

-- The latest in a series of pandemic relief bills [948949950960990] passed the House of Representatives on the 27th of February.  To avoid the threatened filibuster block by Senate BICP members, the Senate majority leader elected to take the reconciliation approach that only required a simple majority approval.  After a Senate vote-a-rama in which the BICP members offered 100 amendments to the bill with only one purpose—delay the final vote in hopes of wearing out the majority.  Each amendment required a full roll call vote.  After all the BICP effort to block the bill, the Senate narrowly approved H.R. 1319 American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 [Senate: 50-49-0-1(0); House: 219-212-0-1(3)].  Senator Daniel Scott Sullivan of Alaska declared that he had to return to Alaska for a family funeral and did not vote, which in turn ensured a default break of the party line tie.  The bill goes back to the House to approve the amendments made by the Senate.  The House vote to affirm and send to the president is expected this coming Tuesday.

A friend and frequent contributor sent along this observation:

“Your UM [Un-Mentionable] is at it, as we all suspected he would.  Is it at all possible that somehow those ‘followers’ can be re-educated to understand what a failure and controlling individual he really is?  It needs doing Cap.

“Someone needs to get started on it.”  The associated article URL:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-56230998

My reply:

Spot on!  The [person who shall no longer be named] does not possess the common sense to know when it is time to bow out gracefully.  His grotesque personality defects do not allow common sense.

Yes, there is hope that his followers can and perhaps will eventually give up on the worthlessness of their loyalty to a man who does not deserve such dedication.  There is always hope.  So, we wait.

Early on during the COVID19 Pandemic, I thought Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York handled the pandemic response better than any other governor, especially in the face of the laissez-faire, every-state-for-themselves approach to the pandemic response by the [person who shall no longer be named].  My image held up nicely for nearly a year until accusations of altering the COVID19 data related to elder care facilities.  The question appeared to be a crack in the dam.  Since then, a half dozen women have come out with accusations of sexual harassment and a toxic workplace.  Even in the light of the Me-Too Movement, Governor Cuomo appears to be handling this situation reasonably well in that he is not going to resign and is insisting upon the due process of a formal investigation of the accusations.  I must say the current flurry of accusations are disappointing.  Cuomo is a political savvy person who knows better, and yet, the alleged conduct does not reflect understanding or appreciation of what the Me-Too Movement stands for and the frustration felt by countless women.  My impression, as I listen to the public accusations, it that of a powerful politician who is desperate for a little love.  He divorced in 2005 and split with his then girlfriend in September 2019.  That said, the accusations against Governor Cuomo are a long way from those made against President Bill Clinton, Governor Eliot Spitzer, or even Senator Al Franken, who gave up his seat in the Senate for far less.  All of this storm swirling around Governor Cuomo pales to the level of a tempest in a teapot compared to the accusations against the [person who shall no longer be named].  Some of the accusations against the [person who shall no longer be named] are working their way through the courts, so hopefully, justice shall be served.  To this point, I think Governor Cuomo was doing what has to be done and should be done in situations like this, but they are embarrassing, nonetheless.  Let the chips fall where they may.

The House passed HR 1 – For the People Act of 2021 – An Act To expand Americans’ access to the ballot box, reduce the influence of big money in politics, strengthen ethics rules for public servants, and implement other anti-corruption measures for the purpose of fortifying our democracy, and for other purposes.  The House vote was predominantly along party lines [House: 220-210-0-2(3)].  This is the first major congressional effort to reform the election process.  We shall see how the Senate chooses to address the matter.  From my perspective, this legislation does not go far enough in improving our election processes, but let us not forget, the largest portion of the responsibility for elections rest at the state level, not federal.  Regardless, there is much that can be done to improve the process.

Comments and contributions from Update no.998:

Comment to the Blog:

“I salute your capacity to drive 60 miles across Phoenix at rush hour.  I hope my ability to do that is never tested.  I’ll get the vaccine only after seeing results from many guinea pigs.  If I get it, I would prefer the Johnson & Johnson single-shot version.  The others have too many bizarre logistical features.

“I long ago ceased believing the numbers on the virus are precise, after two different people I know were told they tested negative but should isolate ‘just in case.’ At the very least, that’s not sound science.

“It was never just King Baby.  He merely leads, for now, a segment of society that has always held hateful views of everyone not them.  Senator Cotton sees the opportunity there, as do various others.  QAnon takes that a few steps further away from reality, and they vote.

“Small correction: I didn’t coin King Baby.  People who study alcoholism/addiction did.

“Your notion of paying for an education with service is sound, but has not been available to those of us who already owe immense amounts of money for higher education.  I couldn't even get work-study at my school, and we’re not all military material.”

My response to the Blog:

We are two of your guinea pigs.  So far, so good.  I hope you can find a convenient place to receive the J&J version—a traditional vaccine.  Please keep me posted on your progress.

Nothing is perfect.  Science is not perfect.  Science does the best it can with the facts available.  I am not sure why anyone would or could think we know everything there is to know about the behavior of a microscopic viral cell.  The people you know were likely exposed to an active case.  Exposure does not mean automatic infection, but isolate just in case is the safe approach.  The science is doing the best it can.

Yeah, the [person who shall no longer be named] did not create this environment; he did not even think it up.  What he did was amplify and exploit the underlying conditions.  He legitimized these damnable conspiracy theorists, white supremacists, and insurrectionists.  He took the dissatisfaction of the Tea Party and pumped it up with steroids.  Cotton is not the only wannabe successor.  We can add Cruz, Hawley, Johnson, and a large number in the House.

Re: King Baby.  I heard it first from you, thus the credit.  I don’t know who the “people who study alcoholism/addiction” are, so I cannot credit them.  If you wish me to cite someone else, please inform me.  Thank you for the correction.

Quite so, there needs to be serious reform.  Block grants are not the correct path.  The quid pro quo system worked for me—no regrets.  Bernie can and should propose a bill for such service.  It certainly does not need to be limited to military service.

 . . . Round two:

“I’m aware science doesn’t claim to yield perfect answers.  Having studied scientific method, I merely wish scientific method would be applied to the current pandemic.  ‘Medical science’ doesn’t really use scientific method well, and the blind panic that is our national response inhibits it even more.

“I found an attribution of King Baby Syndrome to Tom Cunningham, a psychologist who wrote about it in the 1980s to refer to the connection between narcissistic personality traits and addictions in a rehabilitation context.

https://www.rehab4addiction.co.uk/blog/king-baby-syndrome

“While a term of (paid) service is a good way to pay for college, other methods have been used.  ‘Block grants’ (i.e., Pell Grants) worked pretty well as late as my earlier round of college, in the early 1990s.  Work-study worked well, too, in those days of lower tuition and fees.  All of those methods work better than requiring everyone to borrow large amounts of money.

“Enjoy your day unless you drive across Phoenix at rush hour.  That’s strictly survival.”

. . . my response to round two:

You are a hard taskmaster.  On this, we shall respectfully disagree.  The medical profession uses the best scientific methods with the facts they have.  The problem is we cannot examine the atomic and molecular level interactions as thoroughly as we would like because it is most often living flesh that cannot tolerate destructive probing.

Blind panic is a political response, not a medical one.  The professionals give us the facts.  We must decide what to do with those facts.

Ahso!  King Baby is a general descriptor rather than a specific moniker.  Noted.  We shall credit Tom Cunningham.  Thx.

Agreed.  Now, we just need to institutionalize the alternative means.

Yeah, thankfully, we don’t have to make the journey across Phoenix again until the 25th of this month for our 2nd & final dose.

 . . . Round three:

“‘Scientific method’ refers to a specific set of rules for conducting legitimate research.  My statements stand.  So does my attribution of blind panic to all the authority figures, ‘professional’ or not.

“Good luck with driving Phoenix.  The only worse place I've ever driven was New Orleans in its heyday.  We are being offered the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in the building where I live Friday.  If I can get the antibody test (and negative results) before then, I'll probably take it.  I haven't had any past issues with conventional vaccines.”

. . . my response to round three:

As always, you are entitled to your opinion.  We shall respectfully disagree.

Apparently, we shall also disagree on driving in Phoenix.  I don’t know when your last experience was, but today, it is not as bad as it once was, and I can think of many other cities I would classify as worse, not least of which would be New York City, Washington, DC, and Los Angeles.  I would add San Francisco, but I love the city too much.

I do not believe the anti-body test is a prerequisite for the vaccine, but your choice entirely.  I hope you can get the vaccine on Friday—one & done.

 . . . Round four:

“The antibody test is not a prerequisite, but the man I knew who died after getting the vaccine obviously would have had the antibodies due to having survived the virus.  I am considering the various risk factors based on what I know from personal sources.  My acquaintance's death will be recorded as a virus death, not as the result of the vaccine, or so I'm told by another friend who is closer to his family than I.  I have no reason to trust the authority figures' word for anything related to the virus.”

. . . my response to round four:

I am sorry for your loss, but with respect, there are a whole lot of dots missing.  A lot of assumptions in that one. Nonetheless, you must decide based on whatever criteria are important to you.  Good luck, my friend.

Another contribution:

“Just watched the video-absolutely stunning. I don’t expect to be around when we the humans land on Mars-I’d like to be.

“Rather oddly I wrote a short story about an international crew flying to Mars where the 2nd in command, navigator, dies on board and had to be put outside…his body bag followed the ship rustling against the vessel until they changed course and he was left on his own.

“OK enjoy the benefit of your jabs both.”

My reply:

Quite so.  It was truly awesome to see those vid-clips from 300 million miles away.  We can always hope, my friend.  We went from zero to the Moon several times in a decade.  We will both hope to witness humans landing on Mars before we leave this world.

Interesting short story.  Can you share the story?

We are looking forward to moving beyond this phase of life.  I would just as soon not repeat this pandemic experience.

 . . . follow-up comment:

“Of course I can send you a little reading!  I’ll hunt it out…I wrote it some years ago so it’ll be on a memory stick somewhere!

“Rubbish weather here-fog, frost and then rain-all coming from that artic direction.”

 . . . my follow-up reply:

Thx for sharing your short story.  Situations like that are inevitable, but we always hope they never happen.

Ice fog . . . the worst.  Hopefully, the rain will clear whatever ice accumulated rather than add to it.

My very best wishes to all.  Take care of yourselves and each other.

Cheers,

Cap                  :-)
